Anyone? Bueller?
You’re pretty smug when it comes to Lewis and Clark knowledge. St. Louis, after all, was the departure port for the dynamic duo. Name of Lewis’ dog? Seaman, of course. Number of men to die during the voyage? Any schoolboy knows that: Only one, and he was felled most likely by appendicitis. But what about their roles in American life after the expedition ended? The role the voyage played in opening the West? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Yeah, that’s what we thought. Everyone knows the details about the journey itself, but we rarely discuss the larger implications. Until now that is. Last weekend the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (better known to you and me as The Arch) reopened the ex What: Lewis and Clark: Remaking the American West, 1808-1838 Where: Special Exhibits Gallery, Museum of Westward Expansion, under the Arch When: Now through Nov. 30 Cost: Free Info: 314.655.1700 or www.nps.gov/jeff |
