Opera-tunity for Laughs
In March of 1885 the show destined to become Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular opera, The Mikado, premiered at London’s Savoy Theatre. Over 120 years later, London’s Carl Rosa Opera Company has hit the road in order to give modern theater-lovers a chance to discover what that first audience experienced, from the costumes and sets to the direction and choreography. How’d they do it? According to the company’s Web site, this historic re-creation was, in part, made possible with help from Gilbert’s authenticated prompt book. (How cool is that?) And you’re invited to catch the end result at the Touhill tomorrow night. It’s a blast to the past that promises plenty of laughs as you lose yourself in a fictional Japanese town where flirting is a capital offence, mistaken identity is a recipe for disaster and love blossoms despite the bizarre obstacles in its way. What: The Mikado presented by Carl Rosa Opera Company When: Wed., April 9 – 7:30 p.m. Where: Touhill Performing Arts Center, University of Missouri-St. Louis campus, St. Louis Cost: $35 to $50 Info: 314.516.4949 or www.touhill.org |
