The St. Louis Earth Day Festival – slated for April 20 this year – always brings a festive feel to the idea of going green. But the photographs and video art currently displayed at the Ellen Curlee Gallery helped remind us that one day of good intentions and thoughtful consideration on the topic isn’t enough. And, most likely, this was the intended response to Grounded: Photography and Our Contemporary Environment, an exhibit which just so happens to have come to fruition in partnership with the St. Louis Earth Day organization. The works range from in-your-face pics of decaying produce to our favorite, Jenny Kendler’s shot of a woman enfolded within the loving arms of a polar bear. In this latter piece, it’s the cleverly disguised airplane fumes high above this picturesque bear hug that truly struck us: a reminder, perhaps, that when it comes to the environment, it’s time to throw away – er, recycle – those rose-colored glasses. What: Grounded: Photography and Our Contemporary Environment When: Through Sat., May 10 Where: Ellen Curlee Gallery, 1308-A Washington Ave., St. Louis Cost: Free Info: 314.241.1299 or www.ellencurleegallery.com |
