Tales From the Script

The next big thing to hit Hollywood might have roots right here in St. Louis. At least that’s the thinking at Cinema St. Louis, which organizes the annual CinemaSpoke screenplay competition and workshop.

Five finalists are honored with partial readings of their scripts, followed by advice from industry insiders. And tonight, you’re invited to sit in on the second of these readings, which happens to be Vanessa Revard Roman’s The Importance of Doubting Tom, the tale of a woman who’s just been dumped from what she thought was a happy relationship. Roman described it as a “Victorian pastiche of comedy with a warm center” and said it’s “as much about friendship and the bonds we have as it is about love and truth and the search for it.”

Roman knows how hard it is to break into the film industry, but that doesn’t deter her. “What keeps me motivated is the stories in my head; they want to be told, and I love to make people laugh and think.” Her goal is for this screenplay to be made into a film, and to be personally involved from start to finish. How will this happen? “To borrow from Shakespeare in Love, that's a mystery,” she said. “But somehow it will all work out in the end.”

And we’re looking forward to being there from the beginning.
