Missouri Gets a Paint Job

If you’re looking for a bit of fun – plein fun, that is – during your lunch break tomorrow, step on over to the Foundry Art Centre, where plein air artist extraordinaire Billyo O’Donnell will be signing copies of his new book, Painting Missouri: The Counties En Plein Air.

O’Donnell devoted more than six years, not to mention traveling more than 150,000 miles, to complete this colorful tribute to the state, in which each Missouri county is honored with one of O’Donnell’s oil paintings, along with an informative essay by journalist Karen Glines.

Bollinger County, for example, is represented on the page by a picture-perfect pink house, which O’Donnell said “came across to me as an American icon.” For Harrison County, he painted an old mule barn framed by a glorious nighttime winter landscape. And St. Louis city? You’ll see how it looks from atop the Cathedral Basilica. All in all, the book’s pages hold a breath taking way to brighten up an oh-so-typical Thursday.
