Mind Trip

For many of us, entering a movie theater also means checking our brains at the door. But this month, we’re invited to keep our thinking caps securely fastened as the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute examines favorite flicks “from the perspective of analytic thought and theory.”

Now, don’t be thrown off by the academic-sounding language; it simply means that in addition to the shows, you’ll be treated to insightful comments before the curtain opens, along with a thorough analysis after the credit rolls from local psychoanalysts. For example, tomorrow Jacqueline Langley will discuss how Pan Labyrinth’s writer/director Guillermo del Toro used his own life experiences to create the film’s fantastic world.

Every image, every fairytale-type character and every piece of violence were inspired by his past, Langley said, even “the character of Pan is from a dream he had every night at midnight when he slept at his grandmother’s house.” And after four months of research, this is just one of the many tidbits Langley will share. So hop on the couch and get set for a thoroughly thought-provoking mind trip.
