Eight Isn’t Enough
We know time flies when you’re having fun. But it’s still hard to believe the Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis has been entertaining us for eight years in Forest Park without asking a red cent in return. This year’s feature is the powerful Richard III, the tale of a politically ambitious ruler’s rise to the throne, during which the audience comes to understand how this not-so-nice man skillfully used his charm and cunning to overcome physical limitations. And speaking of powerful performances, the curtain will also open on another world-class summer tradition this weekend: the Opera Theatre of St. Louis’ 2008 Festival Season. The four shows gracing the stage through the end of June are the lyrical The Tales of Hoffmann, the exquisite tear-jerker Madame Butterfly, the romantic comedy Una Cosa Rara and the war-torn love story of Troilus and Cressida. As in past years, you are welcome to super size your experience with outdoor picnics beforehand and casual meet-and-greets with cast afterwards. Not to mention free opera previews before each show.
