Catty-Cornered

Hello Kitty, meet Vincent van Gogh. Now why don’t you chat and get to know each other?

Yes, as crazy as it sounds, artist Leslie Holt has made such introductions in her exhibit Hello Masterpiece, currently on display at Cherokee Street’s phd gallery. Her oil paintings feature reproductions of classic artistic images with the added flair of our favorite feline. For example, you’ll find Kitty dancing alongside Degas’ ballerinas, sharing space with Botticelli's Venus and making her preciousness known in Grant Wood’s American Gothic. But what does it all mean?

Ivy Cooper, SIUE professor of art history, wrote in the exhibit’s catalog that Holt successfully “replicated the conflation of high and mass culture that marks 21st century capitalism.” But you’ll have to see for yourself, because there’s so much more also packed inside these mini masterpieces, including plenty of reasons to smile at such seeming silliness.
