King Pin

You’ve probably passed by downtown’s International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame time and time again, always vaguely wondering what exactly – besides smelly old shoes – could possibly be displayed. Perhaps you’ve even considered going inside, until realizing you’re already late for work ... or the game ... or happy hour. Next time, you say. Next time, I’ll take a quick gander.

But now, with it slated for relocation to Texas by year’s end, there’s no more time for procrastination, only plenty of fascinating reasons to explore this local gem. Here a few of our favorites:

  • A replica of the earliest bowling game from 3200 BC. (That predates the pyramids, people!)

  • Looking up everyone you know on the Hometown Heroics database, which lists bowlers who have thrown a 300 game or 800 series.

  • Four frames of bowling included with admission.

  • The chance to observe mechanical pinsetters in action. (Trust us, they’re oddly hypnotic.) And for those throwing a party on the premises, old-fashioned lanes complete with human pinsetters can also be reserved.

  • The Cardinals Hall of Fame, which shares the space. It will temporarily close up shop until a new location is secured, so check out all the red-bird goodies, from a 2006 World Champions ring to the Jack Buck-narrated film Century of Success: 1892-1992, before they head to storage.
