Art Saint Louis’ new home on Washington Avenue is open for browsing and all gussied up with work from 42 area artists. The exhibit is called Patterns and Pixels, but the idea of repetition has never been less routine. Throughout the sprawling gallery you’ll find pieces created with everything from reconstructed books to recycled copper. We were especially taken Christine A. Holtz’s Size 2640 (a “dress” created with tape measures and a found slip) and Amy Firestone Rosen’s visually striking Kimono II. Another highlight is the collaborative “quilt” created by Janice Nesser and Lydia Brockman: Using yarn and scanned images on canvas, they confronted “the cultural acceptance of gendering ... and how that identity is intrinsically woven from our familial relationships.” But which piece will stick with us the longest? Probably the painstaking record of Pete Bushnell’s 2007 lawn-cutting habits. This unique take on the exhibit’s theme had us smiling all the way home.
