Burn Notice

Good fires: The kinds we cook marshmallows over. Bad fires: The wild ones that wreaked havoc in California last fall.

But we weren’t so sure about this one: the decision to intentionally burn prairie land in our own Columbia Bottom. That was, until we found out prescribed burning can be quite an effective management tool for prairies. Not only are nutrients released back into the soil during a burn, new plant life benefits by the additional space and sunlight. Of course, we can’t explain things nearly as well as the naturalists at the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area, where a program on this very subject will be in session next Friday.

So if you’d like to spend some quality time examining the new foliage with a knowledgeable guide at your side, reserve your space now for this heated experience.
