Can You Dig It?

Hey all you spud masters, if you’re looking to dig up some fun tomorrow night, then the Discovery Garden at La Vista Park in Godfrey is the place to be.

At the Potato Harvest Party, families will uncover Kennebec, Red Norland and Purple taters and partake in spud-centered activities ranging from potato-sack races to potato printing. There will also be accolades for those who uncover the most unusual potatoes. And if you’re hungry for more, sample refreshments such as solar-oven potatoes, not to mention taking home your own stash. (The surplus will be donated the Alton Crisis Food Pantry and the Senior Services Plus Meals on Wheels program.)

“The goal of the event is to teach children about where their food comes from, how potatoes are grown and harvested, and how incredible local, organic vegetables can taste compared to those shipped thousands of miles away,” said Christine Favilla, volunteer and vice president of the Community Cultivators, a nonprofit educational and charity organization.
