Ring Tones

The symphony’s 2008-2009 season will start with a bang – a bang back to the Third Age of Middle-earth – when Powell Hall hosts the St. Louis debut of Howard Shore’s The Lord of the Rings Symphony.

Honestly, we were a bit skeptical at first. You know, the whole bit about a film soundtrack qualifying as “serious music.” But mass appeal doesn’t negate brilliance, and there’s no reason so-called serious art can’t be seriously fun. You’ll see more than 200 musicians and vocalists on stage during this symphony in six movements, and (get this) the Saint Louis Symphony Chorus will be singing in the languages developed by Tolkien. (It sounds like bliss to LOTR fanatics.)

Press materials describe the event as “beautiful, haunting and exciting,” and we think it’s a spectacle worth the hype. So reserve tickets now, before your chance to catch this St. Louis premiere is forever scorched ... a bit like the notorious ring itself.
