Perfect Figure

The female body – it’s influenced plenty of artists in its time. But right now we can’t stop talking about how it’s inspired local talent Arlene Ligori.

In 1996 she started working on her Who I Am series of female-centric prints, which were created on the computer using Adobe Illustrator. It was soon clear, however, that the works needed “something edgier, more earthy with a more exciting background.” That was when she came across a blast from the past: old angst-ridden poems from her teenage journal. “They told the tale of love, confusion, anger and pain – something that most of us can relate to,” Ligori explained. She took the idea and ran with it, skillfully surrounding silhouettes of the female form with a few carefully chosen words or using snippets of verse strung together to create the figure’s outline.

These visually striking pieces can be found on Cherokee Street, where a selection of Ligori’s prints, along with her resin sculptures, is permanently on display at Glasscents Gallery. Or visit www.aligori.com for an online encounter.
