What’s the Point?
Still lifes. Boring. Show us some fruit in a frame and we’ll show you a great big yawn. At least, that’s what we thought, until a retrospective of the late Jerry O. Wilkerson opened this summer at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art. He put pizzazz back into the genre by using a felt-tip pen and the tradition of pointillism to create portraits of everything from Campbell’s Pork & Beans to fortune cookies to Diet Sprite to a cup of coffee in a Mickey Mouse mug. He had a style all his own, but you’ll notice nods to other greats, from Da Vinci to Warhol, throughout. Take a gander, and prepare to ponder. But don’t be surprised if you find yourself reflecting on our consumerist culture at the same time you wonder what’s for dinner. And we doubt Wilkerson would want it any other way. What: Discerning Palette: Jerry O. Wilkerson Retrospective When: Through Aug. 24: Wed. to Sun. – 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Where: Judith and Adam Aronson Gallery, first floor, Saint Louis University Museum of Art, 3663 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis Cost: Free Info: 314.977.2666 or http://sluma.slu.edu |
