Goth Cruise

One wears a suit of armor. The other is a 6-and-a-half-foot man, who looks positively flawless in his tight black dress, complete with corset. And that purple-haired girl? She’s nothing next to the man with horns coming out of his head.

Mind you, these are only four of the 150 Goths who were on board the fourth annual Goth Cruise last year. How did the other 2,500 passengers react to their dark-clad shipmates? Why would those who eschew all things sunny head to Bermuda? Are Goths just about music and makeup? Director Jeanie Finlay got answers to these and many other questions in her documentary, Goth Cruise, screening at Webster University this weekend.

The 75-minute run time is split between showing Goths enjoying traditional cruise-y high jinks – frolicking on the beach and sipping fruity rum drinks in the hot tub – to exploring what drives the lifestyle, how members (often older than you’d expect, some with children, many with traditional careers) function in mainstream culture, and why you won’t find them in khaki anytime soon.
