Church Cookin’

The International Association of Culinary Professionals dished out its prestigious Cookbook of the Year Award last month to Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page for their book What to Drink with What You Eat: The Definitive Guide to Pairing Food With Wine, Beer, Spirits, Coffee, Tea - Even Water - Based on Expert Advice from America's Best Sommeliers.

That's nice, but if the IACP really wanted the best cookbook, Let's Get Cooking! from St. Pius V Catholic Church would win, pans down. It's as diverse at the parish itself, full of recipes from many cultures, including popular South Grand ethnic restaurants like the King and I (Thai barbecued chicken), Café Natasha (spinach and lentil soup), and Meskerem (doro wat and injera bread), not to mention several drinks from Absolutli Goosed (pineapple cosmopolitan).

With several recipes from St. Francis Cabrini Academy first-graders, it's also a hoot to read: cheeseburger, "Cook the chicken [!] in the stove for like 3 minutes at 8 degrees. Flip it over and let the other side get hot." Or try this Chicken Nugget recipe: "Get chicken nuggets from Shop ‘n Save. Cook them in the oven for 10 seconds at 10 degrees."

Now that's worthy of an award!
