Maybe we should get a sculpted watermelon for Pablo Weiss (see yesterday's The Daily Sauce) to help celebrate the week-long birthday party for his restaurant, Kitchen K, that starts Monday. Hard to believe that just four short years ago, the stretch of Washington Avenue between Tucker and Broadway was a lonely wasteland, devoid of anything interesting, let alone a place to eat (well, besides a hotel restaurant). But Weiss is used to homesteading; 10 years ago, he operated the erstwhile Hot Locust Cantina – and the adjoining clubs, The Side Door and Pablo's – on a desolate block of Locust, successfully drawing diners into the nooks and crannies of the city. With Kitchen K, Weiss saw the potential of the high ceilings and enormous interior on the ground floor of the restored Merchandise Mart Building. He decorated the expansive dining room with paper lanterns for a funky vibe and dished out simple fare with a twist from the open kitchen (its long, gleaming stainless steel counter taking center stage). During birthday week, you'll be the one receiving the gifts because Kitchen K will serve one free entrée per table. Also, to celebrate the arrival of K's new chef, Josh Norris of Maui, Hawaii, fresh Hawaiian fish will be flown in each day. Sauce pick: Happy Fourth Birthday, Kitchen K! Where to get it: Kitchen K, 1000 Washington Ave., downtown Info: Reservations recommended. Call 314.241.9900. www.kitchen-k.com |
