Young Wine for Old City
Nothing like a glass of wine to toast a major event, like the City of Maplewood turning 100 years old this month. Back in January 1908, when a devastating fire destroyed nine buildings, residents decided to incorporate the area so they could have more responsive local fire protection. Now, 100 years later, the sleepy little town within a cork’s throw from St. Louis City is now hopping with restaurants, clubs and independent retail shops, like the new Saint Louis Cellars. To commemorate the centennial, the folks at this new wine shop offer a limited edition, private label 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (made by Healdsburg Vineyards). Featuring a custom-made Maplewood Centennial label, a bottle retails for (what else?) $19.08. Tasting notes from our own private toast: “very pale and opaque color; think looking into crystal clear water from rose-colored glass-bottom boat. Thin mouthfeel, like skim milk. Light, fruity, no alcohol heat, which is good. Low tannin; dry but no lingering finish. Big, upfront cherry hit, evaporates quickly.” While it certainly won’t age until the city’s bicentennial, it’s a fun bottle to crack open while you sing “Happy Birthday Maplewood.” Sauce pick: Limited Edition City of Maplewood Centennial Wine Where to get it: Saint Louis Cellars, 2640 S. Big Bend Blvd., Maplewood (of course) Price: $19.08 Info: Call 314.880.9000 or visit www.saintlouiscellars.com |
