How About a Fat One Today?
A fat muffuletta, that is. It’s Fat Tuesday, after all – and if Mardi Gras and Super Bowl Sunday weren’t enough to fatten you up for Lent, there’s the “Valenza Special” muffuletta from Blues City Deli in Benton Park. You may think the muffuletta made New Orleans famous, but did you know the sandwich is of Sicilian origin? The story goes that in 1906, Lupo Salvadore invented the now-famous combination of olive salad, salami, ham, mortadella, Provolone and mozzarella cheeses piled high on round Italian bread and sold it from his Central Grocery on Decatur Street in the French Quarter. Blues City Deli owner Vince Valenza got the recipe from the grocery and tweaked it with his own olive salad. The deli will be closed by the time tonight’s parade starts snaking its way through downtown, so best grab your own muffuletta during lunch.
