Barista Bonanza
Attention baristas, your 15 minutes of fame are about to begin. Well, actually, it’s too late for you aspiring java jerks to enter the Midwest Regional Barista Competition, but there’s no reason for the rest of us not to enjoy all the caffeine-fueled fun this weekend. Even if you can’t make and serve four espressos, four cappuccinos and four signature drinks of your own creation during a 15-minute performance period, you can be a volunteer schleper, timer or scorekeeper. Volunteers must attend a one-hour workshop, but they’ll have a prime seat for viewing each barista’s style, signature drink, background music choice (though predictable, we love Ella’s version of Black Coffee), and technique. The stakes are high: The winner will go on to represent the Midwest in the United States Barista Championship. Why, it’s enough to make you want to dust off that old Salton espresso machine you used twice before realizing buying your daily fix was less frustrating. Sauce pick: 2008 Midwest Regional Barista Competition Where to get it: Feb. 8 to 10 at Third Degree Glass Factory, 5200 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis Info: www.kaldiscoffee.com/competition |
