Icelandic Cod & Cask Fest at Schlafly
“Icelandic cuisine? You mean frozen food?” Hardy-har-har. No. There’s a wide variety of food from the Land of Björk, given the island’s pristine environment, free-roaming sheep and strict meat regulations. But it is the North Atlantic, so of course freshly caught fish is the mainstay of any Icelandic diet, especially cod. Really big cod. But, if your only experience with the fish is a mushy, breaded, deep-fried square on a bun, you haven’t experienced the culinary delights of Icelandic Chef Hákon Orvarsson, who is flying in for the Schlafly Tap Room’s annual Cod & Cask Festival this weekend. While Orvarsson takes care of preparing cod more ways that you can shake a fishstick at, Schlafly will take care of hand pumping its cask-conditioned, unfiltered, naturally carbonated ale into many pint glasses. While drinking ale, eating fish and talking in cute Icelandic accents, you can listen to Icelandic singer-songwriter Pétur Ben, whose 2006 debut album was named rock album of the year at the Icelandic Music Awards (he’ll be joined by his band, including Sigtryggur Baldursson, formerly of the Sugarcubes). And, just in case it isn’t cold enough for you, enter to win a free trip to Iceland. Sauce pick: Cod and Cask Festival: Fri., Feb. 8 and Sat., Feb. 9 – 5 p.m. to midnight. Price: Admission is free, but food and drink are additional. Where to get it: Schlafly Tap Room, 2100 Locust St., St. Louis Info: 314.241.2337 and www.schlafly.com |
