Birthday Pie

If you had Monday off to celebrate President’s Day (and lucky you if you did), chances are you don’t have tomorrow off to commemorate the birthday of our country’s first chief executive. But say you did; how would you celebrate? Read Joseph Ellis’ excellent book, His Excellency: George Washington? Unlikely. Chop down a cherry tree? Maybe illegal. Fashion yourself some nice wooden teeth? Let’s move on.

There is only one way to pay homage to George: Bake a cherry pie. There are a gazillion cherry pie recipes out there, but we like the sound of Rebecca Johnson’s My Grandma’s Famous Cherry Pie from her Seasoned with Love Web site. Sounds sweet, doesn’t it? We haven’t actually made this pie – we cannot tell a lie – but her advice seems sound: “Apple cider vinegar is the secret to a flaky crust. This tart pie is very good with vanilla ice cream. Use canned cherries for the best results and make a lattice top.”

Sauce pick: Happy birthday, Mr. President
