Freshest Catch: Trout Season Opens
Ernest Hemmingway wrote, "A pan of fried trout can't be bettered." We concur, especially since March 1 marked the official start of Missouri’s trout season. Papa should have been angling for a spot among the hundreds of others casting their lines into the crisp spring waters of Meramec Spring Park, one of four Missouri trout parks. But, unless you catch your own or know an angler, the Gourmet Trout Dinner this Saturday at Meramec Vineyards in St. James is just about the only way to savor fresh-from-the-stream Missouri rainbow trout. To celebrate the season, Dennis Wilson and Danny Pherigo – aka The Trout Guys – will prepare fresh trout steps from your table while you sip one of the vineyard’s many varietals. With Windrush Farms’ fishing stream nearby, you know the trout will be delivered fresh and ready for the pan. Sauce pick: Meramec Vineyards’ Gourmet Trout Dinner Price: $18 per person Where to get it: Sat., March 8 – seating begins at 5 p.m. at Meramec Vineyards, St. James Info: For reservations, call 573.265.7847.
