From Beer to Wine

What’s a guy do after spending 35 years as a beer executive at A-B? If you’re Ray “Buster” Goff, you head to Washington state to become a managing partner and owner of two wineries – Amavi and Pepper Bridge, both in Walla Walla – and wait for the rave reviews to pour in. Goff is in town on St. Patrick’ Day to show off recent vintages from both wineries, which sounds a lot better than swilling cheap green beer. We picked up a bottle of the Amavi 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon at 33 Wine Bar – where Goff will uncork his wines – for an impromptu tasting among friends. We found the ’04 young, soft and full of ripe fruit, with nuances of tobacco and anise mid-palate and a light tannin finish. Decanting an hour before serving opened up the flavors, but it should also age quite well. Which is to say we think we know where we’ll be spending St. Patty’s Day.
