Sighing Over Acai
With all the good stuff coming out of the Amazon rainforest lately, we’re surprised there’s a rainforest left, especially since everything thing grown there either helps us live to 110, gets rid of wrinkles or makes our immune systems intimidating to all disease. In Brazil, they’re crazy about a little dark purple berry from the acai palm tree, using the juice and pulp to make smoothies, juice blends and sodas. While on a surfing trip to Brazil, Ed Nichols and Ryan Black loved acai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) so much that when they returned to California, they started Sambazon, the first U.S. supplier of acai-based products. That was eight years ago. Today, the company gets as much attention for its progressive business practices as for its whiz-bang juices, smoothies, sorbets and supplements. Moreover, when notables like Dr. Mehmet Oz – who put acai on his “Ultimate Anti-Aging” checklist – love the power-packed fruit, you can be sure it will get more attention than those Amazonian clear-cutting lumberjacks. But, you may ask, does it taste like something raked up from the rainforest floor? We sampled all six juice and smoothie blends; you’d never know something so delicious is chocked full of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, dietary fiber, phytosterols, amino acids, vitamins and trace minerals.
