Your patience has been exceptional. And now, a reward more than 23 years in the making: O’Fallon Brewery’s Whiskey Barrel Smoked Porter is on the shelves – but probably not for long. A bit of backstory: O’Fallon head brewer Brian Owens went down to the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky to pick up some bourbon barrels in which to age some of his sensational smoked porter. Upon his return, he realized that prized Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve bourbon had been in those barrels since 1984. (For more details, check out this Sauce story from last fall.) So this super-special smoked porter has finally landed at a handful of retailers. (We bought ours at Randall’s in South City, which still had stock as of yesterday. $24.99 per 22-ounce bomber – limit two!) And the only half-barrel in town is on tap at Riddle’s in The Loop.
