Watermelon Worship

Memorial Day marks the start of our annual seasonal obsession with watermelon.

Every spring and summer, we circle the huge, addictively sweet fruit at our local supermarket, trying to get up the nerve to buy a whole watermelon. Then we wimp out and buy a little, precut section because we don’t have the slightest idea how to slice one without breaking our best knife or losing a few body parts.

But all that was before we discovered the watermelon knife – a long, super-sturdy, super-sharp stainless-steel blade that takes the struggle (and fear!) out of slicing a whole watermelon. Two companies – Forschner and Lamson – make versions of the knife for about the same price. The knives are also perfect for slicing through other types of melons, like honeydew and cantaloupe, and we’re curious to see how they handle spaghetti and acorn squash in the fall. Which brings us, of course, to our next seasonal food obsession ...
