Do You Know Hunger?

Sure, we crave a sugary snack mid-afternoon or wait too long to eat lunch on busy days. But that’s nothing compared to the millions of Americans who struggle to put food on the table every day or experience chronic hunger. Sometimes, it’s too easy to ignore the reality, blame the victim and become insensitive to what hunger looks like.

This year, National Hunger Awareness Day, traditionally observed on the first Tuesday in June, will become Hunger Action Month, set for September. But we say today’s as good as any to take action, big or small. Here are a few suggestions:

•    Read the Local Impact Survey just released by America’s Second Harvest, available online at www.secondharvest.org.
•    Volunteer or just visit a local food bank to learn more about hunger in our community. Find organizations by searching Washington University’s Community Service Office, www.communityservice.wustl.edu.
•    Make a financial donation to a local charity focusing on hunger issues.
•    Read a book. Two we suggest are: Ending Hunger Now by George McGovern, Bob Dole and Donald Messer, and Creating a World Without Poverty by Muhammad Yunus.
•    Look around with open eyes and ask, “What can I do?”
