Save the Tomatoes!

It’s a common cook’s complaint: You use half of an onion or tomato, and then wrap up the rest and put it in the refrigerator. Within a few days, the tomato is spongy and the onion is dried out.

We’d given up on solving this one, until we stumbled upon the Tomato & Onion DesiDry Container at The Container Store in Brentwood. Like most food storage containers, the DesiDry promises airtight protection. But there’s a secret ingredient: The container’s dome-shaped top holds a small, Oxygen Inhibitor Packet that “absorbs excess oxygen” to further protect the food from spoilage. (The company also makes a larger domed container for lettuce.)

Both products promise to protect your food six times longer than traditional containers. They also come with two Oxygen packets that are meant to last for three to six months each.
