Show Me the Double Gold

Wow, 2,000 wines from 15 countries and 30 states and provinces is a lot of wine to taste, let alone judge. But that’s how the Tasters Guild International Wine Judging Competition rolls. Each spring, for the past 21 years, the Guild – a national society of food and wine educators and enthusiasts – awards medals to the latest releases from hundreds of wineries.

This year, the big event was held in Michigan at the Secchia Institute for Culinary Education at Grand Rapids Community College. Of course, each winery wants to take home the most coveted medal of them all: the double gold. This year, the coveted award went to only 67 wines, five of them from Show-Me state wineries: Mount Pleasant’s 2005 Norton; St. James’ NV Riesling and both the 2004 and Reserve Norton; and Stone Hill’s 2007 Vignoles. When the final counting was done, 74 wines from nine Missouri wineries took home medals. Now, let’s get busy with the toast.
