Bonding over Beads

The problem with The Pampered Chef, Tupperware and other "shopping party" events is that there's only so much one can say about that nifty new measuring cup. Yet, once you're held hostage at one of these gatherings, you have to listen to the whole marketing spiel and ooh and ah over the entire catalog before you are allowed to relax, have fun and pick at the cheese tray the hostess so kindly provided.

That's why DIY shopping parties are gaining popularity. You're not just schmoozing and perusing the goods your next-door neighbor is selling out of her home for a tasty commission; you're partaking in a fun activity at the same time.

Like jewelry-making.

Luxe Jewels parties are a chance to get together, make some very pretty pieces from beads, crystals, charms and metals … and yes, let your neighbor take home a very pretty bauble for her efforts. (And if you're the hostess, there are tons of rewards in it for you.) The finished products really are eye-catching (apparently, desperate housewife Teri Hatcher is nuts over Luxe), especially the Organza Extravaganza line, which consists of crystal beads strung on organza ribbons (starting at $19 for two strands).

St. Louis Luxe Jewels consultant Vicki Bensinger has coordinated bridal showers, birthday parties and girls’ nights out in homes all over the region. If you got the jewelry gene from Mama, a Luxe Jewels event might be a nice thing to plan for Mother's Day, too.

Sauce Pick: Do-it-yourself jewelry making
Price: From $12, but the price depends on the kit and piece being made.
