A Place Just Paces Away

Around 1900, Maplewood had a whistle stop just paces away from where Studio Altius now stands. Some people say the main destination in those days was a hardware shop. Now the train-track-lined Greenwood Boulevard attracts other kinds of hustle and bustle.

In the several weeks since it opened its doors to photographers, filmmakers, fashion designers and art impresarios, Studio Altius has developed new plans to attract business conveners and wedding revelers. Proprietor David Cerven, a baritone with a background in opera, said he could also envision chamber recitals taking place in the intimate space.

Theatrical curtain track systems are what make Studio Altius versatile enough for all this, while hardwood floors and 11-foot ceilings make it decidedly ambiance-rich.

"The renovation of this building was phenomenal. It's a great space to be in," said Cerven.
