Papa, Blow Your Horn

Back in college, your dad was in a jazz band. Wow, if you had a nickel for every time you’ve heard that, you could upgrade his saxophone for Father’s Day. Of course, he’d probably be just as happy to get the Charlie Parker treatment for a day.

This weekend, the Saxquest Saxophone Museum (the first of its kind in the U.S.) will be celebrating its grand opening. Dad will be jazzed about the performances, the free clinics, not to mention the exhibition. Rare pieces include a high-pitched – as in an octave above soprano – sax plus a full collection of pre-Civil War Adolphe Sax instruments (yes, that Adolphe Sax, creator of the first saxophone). At the end of the event, he can join an open jam session with rock star saxophonist Kim Bock. Oh, the stories he’ll tell!
