A Life in Pictures

During the past four years, The Public Policy Research Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis has been arming a diverse range of community groups with cameras, teaching them photography techniques and history, and encouraging them to capture everyday life from their point of view.

The most recent installment of this series focuses on children assigned court-appointed special advocates – adults who volunteer to watch over youngsters with notably complex family situations. Since these children aren't allowed to appear in published photos, for this project the budding artists were taught about "vanitas," a method made by famous by 17th-century Dutch painters who used inanimate objects to represent their subjects. Nine-year-old Sara, for instance, spread out her a corduroy coat "as if I was in it" alongside a teddy bear and other special items to help capture her personality.

After checking out all of the thought-provoking results – displayed at both the Public Policy Research Center and CASA offices – you may be inspired to shoot some memorable pics of your own. But as you hit the streets with camera in hand, keep in mind The Irvin Schankman Memorial Photography Contest, also sponsored by The Public Policy Research Center. Judges will by on the lookout for the best photos of St. Louis, its people and its places taken within the past 50 years, with prizes of up to $1000 awarded to winning submissions.
