November 18th, 2009 edition of The Daily Sauce: Entertainment. Visit Our Entertainment Archive. An Uncommon Fairy Tale Fairy tales are fun, and Han Krasa’s colorful and uplifting fairy tale opera Brundibar – which centers on a group of friends and their animal pals, who together get the better of a heartless organ-grinder – is no exception. But here’s what sets the show apart: It was once put on regularly at Theresienstadt, a Nazi concentration camp where Krasa and most of the young cast (who originated the show at a Prague orphanage) eventually found themselves. There, Brundibar quickly became a favorite of both Jews and Nazis. It was even filmed for Nazi propaganda purposes and proudly presented for Red Cross representatives when they came to visit the camp – which, of course, had been thoroughly revamped for the inspection. Starting tomorrow night, you can catch the family-friendly show at The Touhill, where one of the original cast members, Ela Weissberger, will be on-site to introduce the performance.
