March 4th, 2010 edition of The Daily Sauce: Food and Wine. Visit Our Food and Wine Archive. Early Birds Get the Bread Call it an upscale Bunny Bread store (“That’s what ah said”), but on Friday the St. Louis-based bakery café Companion will debut the Early Bird Outlet, a small discount bread store at its south St. Louis City baking facility. The new venture comes just a few months after owner Josh Allen shuttered his Central West End café (the Clayton and Ladue cafés remain open). The Dutchtown building has served as Companion’s central baking facility since Allen first pulled baguettes out of the stone oven back in 1993. But starting this weekend, bargain-hunters and local foodies can head to the back door beside the loading dock to stock up on the local baker’s wares. Product will vary day to day based on overbakes and excess capacity, but with everything sold by the pound at a 35 to 45 percent discount, we’re more than happy to deal with the unknown. Sauce pick: The Early Bird Outlet Where to get it: Companion’s baking facility, 4555 Gustine Ave., St. Louis. Open Fri. to Sun. – 7 a.m. to noon, or until bakery products are sold out.
