A Day in the Life

Attention shutterbugs! St. Louis Writers Guild recently gave the poets their turn; the 48 Hour Film Project did the same for the filmmakers. Now it's your turn to showcase your creative abilities, thanks to The Downtown Dutchtown Business Association. It's sponsoring A Day In the Life of Downtown Dutchtown, a one-day photo contest designed to capture a slice of St. Louis life in this unique urban neighborhood.

Photographers of all ages and skill levels should head to the area between Chippewa on the north, Bates on the south, Grand on the west and Broadway on the east on Wed., June 21, from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. to snap shots of residents and business owners at work and at play. Contest organizers encourage spending all day behind the lens – winners will be selected from each of the 24 hours; three overall winners will also be chosen. Other rules: Use any photo equipment you've got (well, we're not sure if your Polaroid Instamatic or your daguerreotype will suffice, but we're certain that digitals and 35-millimeters are allowed), and shoot in either black-and-white or color (although winning photos will be published in black and white). Judges, who include professionals from such esteemed institutions as the Post, Wash. U. and United Press International, will be looking for stills that creatively capture the essence of the neighborhood.

Winning entries will be announced in July and will be published in a book of the same name, as well be featured on the association's Web site and in a special exhibit. Winning photographers will attend a book signing and gala event at The Bluffs on Broadway in August.
